Academy District 20 (ASD20) will begin providing tuition-free, full-day kindergarten starting in the 2019-20 school year. ASD20’s site-based approach to education, allowing each of its 22 elementary schools to develop its own programming and curriculum, provides students and parents unique offerings.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), traditional full-day kindergarten produces numerous benefits for students, including higher self-esteem and independence, greater creativity and higher long-term achievement.
ASD20 provides those benefits through its small class sizes, capped at 25 students. Each class also includes both a kindergarten teacher and support personnel, giving each student personal attention.
“Our distinctive programs make us stand apart from the other districts in our region,” said Dr. Mark Hatchell, superintendent, ASD20. “Only here will you find kindergarten programs that offer foreign languages, performing and visual arts, physical education and fun.”
Programs like Academy Endeavor Elementary School’s (AEES) KinderCorner builds children’s literacy skills in reading, language and vocabulary. They learn valuable reading and comprehension, as well as social and emotional skills critical to holistic development.
“My son went through the KinderCorner program and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Carrie Mitchell, teacher, AEES. “By the end of kindergarten he knew more than 200 sight words, was reading independently and was confident and ready for first grade.”
Learning Labs, another program unique to ASD20 and available at AEES and several other schools, provide a hands-on approach to learning. Students reflect on what they learn in class and apply it to music, art, dance and performing arts. This provides a right-brained application of a left-brain lesson, ensuring deeper understanding and retention.
Beyond academic approaches, ASD20’s kindergarten programs provide play-based learning, allowing students to learn through exploration while developing social skills, curiosity and a lifelong love for learning. ASD20 is holding Kindergarten Open Enrollment through May 31, 2019. All interested families can apply at ASD20.org/kindergarten.
