Martha Hinson is the new Health and Wellness Specialist for Academy District 20. Martha recently took a few moments to sit down and talk about her position.
“Education is in my genetics. My mom, my grandmother, my sister. I was destined to become a teacher.”
What is the Health and Wellness Model used by D20?
“The whole school, the whole community, whole child model…This is a state and national model for health and wellness. At the core of the model is the student. There are five words, health, safe, supported, engaged, and challenged. And the next thing that happens is all the things that happen in school. Instruction, physical education, having health services, counseling services, school environment, staff wellness, community involvement, and family engagement. All of those are critical into the health of a child. On the broader side is that community.”
Tell us about the Health and Wellness Committee.
“They have written our school wellness board policy. Just this past year it was updated to include social and emotional health, which guides so much, not only physical health, drug and alcohol use. It focuses too on that instruction for health behaviors. Lifelong health and wellness, so you know it’s pretty powerful what this committee has done.”
How can someone get involved in the committee?
“The meetings are all held at the Education and Administration Center from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. in Willow. And if they want to be a part they can contact me at email@example.com.”
