Tom Andrew is the principal for Academy District 20’s newest middle school, Chinook Trail. Scheduled to open for the 2019-2020 school year, Tom recently took a few moments to sit down and share his philosophies on teaching, leading and learning.
Q: What are you like as a principal?
A: “Kids are everything, kids are my world. Everything’s at the center and I always put things through the lens of how is this good for kids. How can we continue to work to grow and improve for not only our students, but their learning and how we’re serving them.”
Q: Why did you choose to pursue a career in education?
A: “I owned a business in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where I was born and raised. I had some child clients – kid clients – and I just loved working for them so much. I love their curiosity and their enthusiasm and energy. So, I kind of feed off of that and that’s how I ended up in education.”
Q: What is your educational philosophy?
A: “I believe life is inquiry-based. You know, we’re naturally curious people and my educational philosophy is really in constructivism, where we have to really experience our own learning and get it hands-on. I believe that allows for a deeper understanding of what it is that we’re learning, what we’re finding out and how we can move forward to improve something.”
