Earth Day is right around the corner, so to spread awareness the Green Team at Academy District 20 created the Earth Day Poster Contest. The contest is across all schools in Academy District 20 and includes all ages. The winners are announced in early April then their posters go to the print shop and are displayed in each school to raise awareness for Earth Day, April 22nd.
“Out of 700 submissions the team had to choose nine” said Michael Redmond, Energy and Sustainability Manger at Academy District 20. “It was really difficult because we had so many great submissions. We ended up allowing one additional winner because we couldn’t break the tie on two posters.”
Children all across the district were encouraged to participate by submitting a poster of what earth day represents for them. Submissions came from elementary, middle, and high school. All first place winners at each school level get their posters printed and distributed across all the schools, where they will be displayed to help spread awareness of Earth Day.
“It’s a victory not only that we have all this interest but that students are having conversations on the front end about sustainability,” said Michael.
The inspiration for the Earth Day Poster contest came to Michael when they had created posters from the district and posted them around the schools. “They were just a bit too polished,” said Michael “so in order to get the kids interested and connect with the idea better, we created the contest.”
It’s the 4th annual earth day poster contest and each year it is growing.
