The journey to and from school for many Academy District 20 students includes a ride on a big, yellow bus. For many of those students, the trips are the first and last public interaction they have during the day. For bus driver Orville Harder, the students can either make or break your day.
Over the past 12 years, Harder has driven thousands of students. He said it’s all about how you treat the kids each day.
“If you great them and talk to them like young adults, they’ll give you the same respect back,” Orville said.
The big question, is where is the best place on the bus to sit. Harder said he’d much rather drive than ride the bus. However, the students will almost always take the seats in the back.
“They go over bumps, they’re bouncing around. They love it in the back because they like amusement rides,” he said.
