On a bristly winter day, as the sun set behind the mountains, the Air Academy High School Band finished more than a dozen drills for a new Academy District 20 promotional video.
Creating a video or television commercial can seem simple, however, creating a 30 second spot meant the band members marched and stood in the cold volunteering almost two hours of their time. Drill after drill, take after take the band members willingly obliged.
After the final take, what transpired was a wonderful surprise. Rather than bustle into jackets, or rush to the warmth of a building, a drummer sounded off. His fellow band members stopped mid-stride and began to jam.
They were dancing, doing their own thing and celebrating the only way they knew how – by cutting formation and each doing their own dance while simultaneously creating up-beat togetherness in music.
The Air Academy High School band is headed to the Tournament of Roses at the end of this month. This group has spent countless hours practicing together and individually. The reward is being one of just a handful of bands chosen from across the globe to march in the Parade of Roses.
