The Air Academy High School is celebrating the Kadet Marching Band’s title as the 2017 Colorado State High School 4A Marching Band Champions. The win marks Air Academy’s 12th overall state title, and its first state championship since 2015.
It’s been a long journey for these students, but their dedication runs deep. The students began prepping for this moment the day after the 2016-2017 school year ended.
Led by band director Stoney Black, who has nine state titles to his name at Air Academy, the Kadet Marching Band performed its championship routine for the entire school to celebrate the win.
“It’s really cool to get the whole school out here, to see the kids, to see how much they’re working,” said Black. “It was funny to see it out there, because you could see missing areas in the stands because, we have 200 kids out on the field this year.”
Nearly 20 percent of the school population participates in marching band, and after the state title, the band now gets to look forward to performing during the Parade of Roses in Pasadena, Calif., on New Year’s Day.
Other Academy District 20 Schools placed in the state 4A competition: Liberty High School took fourth place, Pine Creek High School took seventh and Rampart High School finished ninth. In the 2A competition The Classical Academy Titans won the state title.
