Students paint their school to spread the LOVE.
Antelope Trails elementary took part in the “Spray the Love” art project. This project was started by Discovery Canyon Student, Emma Weien and her family, after the loss of friends and classmates because of suicide in the Academy District 20 community. Emma talks about her motivation for the project.
Emma Weien: “In my family we’ve always grown up that, if you’re hurt if you’re sad, draw, try and find some creative outlet for this and wanted to do that for our community.”
Emma wanted to start a project to remind others that despite the hurt and hate in the world, there will always be LOVE and there’s a lot that makes life worth living.
Emma Weien: “We should try and send our messages that there is love in the world and yes, there are sad times and yes there are good times, sometimes it’s hard to remember that but we need to.”
The Weien Family’s first project started on Struthers Road where they spray painted forget-me-not flowers on a fence surrounded by the word LOVE. The hope was that all who passed by would see that love and spread the message of hope.
Now that message is spreading to Antelope Trails. Students sprayed love on three buildings around the campus. The vibrant flowers added a pop of color and love to the buildings for all to enjoy.
Audrey Smullen: “Well today when we were spraying on the wall we had all these different kinds of stencils and paint and we could do all these different kinds of flowers and it was a lot of fun!”
Emma thinks that working with students is a great fit for this project.
Emma Weien “The great part about kids is they find the good parts of life. They always do and this is our kinda way of helping the younger generation remember that as they grow up.”
All elementary students at Antelope Trails got to participate in the “Spray the Love” art project.
Sophia Godwin “I think it was pretty cool how the Weien Family chose to do this and how were able to do it here.”
